why not doing a drift activity in San Antonio?
« on: March 18, 2012, 04:13:09 AM »

hello,
why not doing a drift activity in San Antonio?
I contact with San Antonio raceway and this is what I have said:
"Hello,
I have a suggestion for you. why not to do a drifting activities in the parking lot? you have a large parking lot you can do some different types of actives other than drag like car shows and drifting. I suggest for you to do some drifting activities in the parking lot area and it will be interesting to have something new and we as a drifters will more interested because there are no legal track to practice drifting near San Antonio.
Thank you"

and this is what they responded:
"You can contact me if you would like to see about organizing something like this..
Thanks!
Freddy Cruz
210-849-3225"

so, please contact them and try to do some drifting activities at the parking lot in that race way track.
this website have a lot of fans and drifting fans.

thanks

I personally have met with Freddy last year because I wanted to organize an event there since there are no events around here, but the price tag for renting it is pretty large. Last time I did the math, the entry fee for drivers would have to be in the  $100-$150 range with at least 25 drivers to break even. Plus the surface isn't really the best, it's about as bad as Mineral Wells. I would have followed through but I was just very unconfident in how many drivers would actually show up. It seems like the second you mention you have to have a helmet and an entry fee all of the street drifters in SA lose interest.

Would definitely be rad if there was an event there though, would be nice having it close to home.  Freddy is a pretty cool guy but he's all business, you would probably be better at discussing things with him than I was

Thanks man, that helps a lot.
I have contact several websites to see if they are interested or not, so the will organize something and be the sponsor for the event. I know a few people here in San Antonio will be interested in that. Yesterday in the Lone star Drift in Houston, I met a few people from San Antonio. They drove all the way from San Antonio to Houston to enter the drift event and I'm one of them. It will be nice if we have drift event close to us at least in Austin or San Marcos.

thanks again

Some buddies of mine really want to as well. Since I'm so caught up in wanting to do this season I don't know if I want to deal with buying more tires just for the sake of doing a San Antonio event, but I know they want to really bad. They said they currently have 15 drivers that said they'll go from here, so if they all show up it'll be ~$166ish per person. I don't know about anyone else, but that's a bit expensive. We'd need 20 confirmed drivers to drop the price down to $100 per person.

Like I said it's possible, but from my experiences most of the people down here in San Antonio say they're down, but when it comes to having to spend money on tires and buying a helmet, they all magically disappear and don't show up.

I would love to throw San Antonio events, that is where I am from and I used to throw them in the past.  The problem with the Marion Drag Strip/San Antonio Raceway is we have done an event there back in 2004, my very first one.  The venue is kind of meh, and the asphalt isn't all that great.  The cost on the parking lot is really high for the quality of the place.  The owner wasn't really all that nice either, and I don't like dealing with people that make everything difficult.

I hosted an event at the SBC Center, and they fucked me to the wall, and the parking lot wasn't great.

I hosted an event at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, and that event rocked, but again the venue was AWFUL to work with.

If I can find a good place to throw an event, I would love to.  Fiesta Texas is too expensive and the pavement is terrible by the way, already checked that.  I also asked the San Antonio guys about a year ago if they wanted me to do an event, and they said no, it wasn't worth it, not enough people would come.  But if I can find a really cool place I will do it.

I would do Verizon Wireless Amphitheater again, someone find me the contact info.

I will not do:  SBC Center/Fiesta Texas/San Antonio Raceway, I don't think they are worth it.

Well put, Aaron. When I was on my lunch break I actually was thinking I needed to edit my post to add in how crappy the parking lot for SAR is. Tires would get destroyed so fast. The guy that runs it, Freddy, isn't really a class act either. I understand it's all business, but even then it doesn't mean you have to be a complete dick. When I met with him in person he gave me 5 minutes to talk to him about it and then shoo'd me off.

I'll try and snag you the contact info for that, Aaron. Would be sweet. Until then, I'm perfectly happy having to drive to Dallas/MW/Houston to attend the awesome events out there.

I was just down at SAR on Friday, it'd be tough to have a drift event there, the parking lot isn't big enough. even by 2005 course standards its kinda small.

Verizon Ampitheater is permanently closed. That's unfortunate.

Try this place. They have a very large lot, at least it looks big from the highway. Looks smooth too, almost like its concrete not asphalt.
